This hands-on course will introduce you to product safety and compliance. The product safety and compliance environment in Australia is undergoing unprecedented change with the introduction of the new Australian Consumer Law that will take effect on the 1st of January 2011. The new law will have far reaching implications for business with the introduction of mandatory reporting, safety warning notices and substantiation notices. Attend this practical course to find out what it means for you from a product safety perspective and how to comply under the new regime.
Course Description
This practical half-day course provides an introduction to product safety and compliance and is designed as a precursor to the intermediate product risk assessment training one-day course (SCPRA02).
Learning Objectives
Explores product safety at the national and international level and focuses on the current state of compliance, regulation, and legislative issues. Instruction will touch on some of the issues relating to specific industries as reflected in the make-up of the class.
The instruction will include requirements for meeting voluntary and mandatory standards, testing, certification, labels and warnings, and issues around harmonisation between countries.

This training is intended for product buyers, senior managers, risk managers, compliance managers, quality managers, creative designers, engineers, production managers, technologists, selectors, importers, exporters, regulators and internal auditors.
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for this course.
This course is designed for individuals that have little or no experience in product safety and compliance.
Course Outline
Participants will be guided through the following topic areas:
- An overview of the supply chain and respective roles and responsibilities
- Overview of the new Australian Consumer Law and what it means to you from a product safety perspective
- The role of standards and how they relate to compliance including an overview of key mandatory and voluntary standards
- Understanding testing and certification
- Practical and hands-on exercise on understanding how to interpret and validate a test certificate (including pitfalls and traps)
- Overview of recalls and managing the media case study
- Where to go for more information
